What is Loom?

Loom is an asynchronous video messaging tool that makes it easy to record and share screen recordings, walkthroughs and video messages. In 2023, Atlassian acquired Loom for $975 million, and since then the platform has been deeply integrated with AI capabilities.

Loom AI automatically generates a title, summary and list of action items for every video recorded โ€” removing the need for recipients to watch the full recording when a quick summary will do. The AI can also answer questions about a video's content and create chapters automatically.

The tool is particularly valued by remote teams who use video messages to replace meetings, provide feedback, demonstrate software bugs, create onboarding walkthroughs or give design critiques. Video messages are faster to create than written explanations and far more informative than text alone.

With over 25 million users, Loom has become the default asynchronous communication tool for distributed teams. Since the Atlassian acquisition, it integrates tightly with Jira and Confluence.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • AI auto-generates title, summary and action items for every video instantly
  • Replaces meetings with async video โ€” saves significant time for remote teams
  • Dead simple to use โ€” record and share a link in under 30 seconds
  • AI can answer questions about a video's content without watching it
  • Deep integration with Jira and Confluence following Atlassian acquisition
  • Free plan supports up to 25 videos โ€” sufficient for many individual users

Cons

  • No affiliate programme currently available
  • Free plan limited to 25 videos and 5-minute maximum recording length
  • Video quality dependent on user's internet connection and hardware
  • Not suitable for produced or edited video content โ€” purely for recordings
  • Some users report reduced innovation pace since Atlassian acquisition

AI Tool Bible verdict

Loom is one of those tools where once you start using it, you cannot imagine working without it. The AI summaries are a standout feature โ€” they mean your recipients can get the gist in 30 seconds rather than watching a 5-minute video. The free plan is generous, and the tool is now deeply embedded in Atlassian's ecosystem. No current affiliate programme, but Loom drives strong search traffic and is a highly relevant listing for productivity and remote work audiences.
